Craig Stuart is a Scottish-born artist based in Cape Town and a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art.
His work is centred on water—its depth, movement, and unpredictability—shaped by early experiences in Scotland and New Zealand. Influences from Japanese design can be seen in the flow, rhythm, and compositional balance within his paintings.
Working in a layered, methodical way informed by printmaking, Stuart builds structure before allowing fluid processes to introduce chance and movement. The result is work that sits between control and unpredictability.
In recent years, his paintings have shifted toward a more literal visual language, with clearer forms and subjects emerging while retaining a strong sense of atmosphere and depth.
