This series centres on koi moving through layered, shifting water—caught between clarity and concealment.
Water remains both subject and process. Each piece begins with control, then opens to unpredictability: paint is allowed to move, disrupt, and settle in ways that can’t be fully directed. The result is a surface that feels fluid, unstable, and alive. The work has become more literal. The koi now emerge clearly, yet are never fully fixed—interrupted by lines, fragments, and currents that pass through and around them. Influenced by Japanese tattoo design, the compositions are built through flow and balance rather than static arrangement. Across the series, a quiet tension holds: control and chance, stillness and movement, surface and depth. These paintings are less about depicting water, and more about being within it. |
